Hello everyone! ! If you’re a frequent visitor to my previous articles, you’re probably already familiar with how the simple email application we use in our daily lives works. In the previous article, we looked at User Agents (MIME) in detail. It’s time to understand how an actual mail transfer agent works. The actual mail transfer takes place through a message transfer agent (MTA). On the Internet, the source computer connects to port 25 of the destination computer to deliver email. To send email, the system must have a client MTA, and to receive email, the system must have a server MTA. The formal protocol that defines MTA clients and servers exclusively on the Internet is called SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Basically, we can say that the two most important functions proved by a message transfer agent (SMTP proxy) are: it first accepts incoming connections and copies the message from the sender to the recipient’s mailbox. If an error message is returned to the sender, every message will not be delivered. SMTP is used twice between the sender and the sender’s mail server and between the two mail servers (see the image above). Also, we will see in the next article that another protocol is needed between the mail server and the receiver. Now let’s take a closer look at how the SMTP protocol works (see the diagram above which describes all the steps below): First, a TCP connection is established between the sender and receiver on port 25, the sender acts as a client, and the receiver machine acts as a client computer as a server. Now the client is waiting for the server to take some action (active) in the communication. The server now sends a line of text showing its entity and whether it is willing/unwilling to receive mail. If the server is not ready, the client will disconnect, wait a while and try again. So when the server is ready to accept email, the client announces the sender and recipient of the email. If the recipient (address) exists in the destination, the server requests the client to start sending the message (stream of bytes). The client then sends the message and the server sends back its acknowledgment. Because TCP proves a reliable stream of bytes, checksums are not required. All emails will now be sent. After all emails have been exchanged, the connection will be terminated. SMTP uses numeric codes and is a simple ASCII protocol.

Components of Email System:

The three main components of an Internet mail system are: User agents. SMTP sender. SMTP recipient. User agents help compose messages for users (by accepting input fields, as shown in the previous article). Each contains a header field, the recipient’s email address, and other information. All messages are queued and prove input to the SMTP sender. The SMTP sender then dequeues the message and transmits it over the SMTP connection to the appropriate destination host over a TCP connection on port 25. The SMTP protocol is used to transfer messages from an SMTP sender to an SMTP receiver (using a TCP connection). The SMTP receiver receives each incoming message and stores it in the user’s mailbox. If the email is to be forwarded, the SMTP recipient will copy it to the outgoing email queue.

SMTP Commands

SMTP uses commands and responses to transfer messages between MTA clients and MTA servers. Commands are sent from client to server (using keywords) and responses are sent from server to client (3-digit code). After a TCP connection is established, the SMTP sender sends commands to the receiver over the connection. Each command consists of a line of text, beginning with a 4-letter command code. SMTP Operation (Mail Transfer Phases)

The process of transmitting a particular mail message occurs in three stages: Connection establishment (establishment). Email transmission (exchange of commands and responses). disconnect. Establish Connection The sender initiates a TCP connection with the receiver. Once the connection is established, the receiver entifies itself as “220 Service Ready”. The sender then entifies itself through the HELO command. Recipients now accept sender IDs with “250 OK”. Email Transport SMTP senders can now send one or more messages to SMTP recipients (because the connection is already established). It consists of three steps: The MAIL command first entifies the sender of the message. One or more RCPT commands entify the recipient of this message. The DATA command transmits the text of the message. Disconnecting it consists of two steps: First, the sender sends a QUIT command and waits for a response. The receiver initiates its TCP shutdown after sending its response to the QUIT command. Email Gateway: An email messaging system (using the SMTP protocol) works when both the sender and recipient are connected to the Internet and can support a TCP connection between them. But in reality, there are many machines that may not be connected to the internet and still want to send and receive messages. This can be achieved by using an application-level email gateway. The gateway process should pull incoming messages from one queue and put them in another queue. Last but not least, you might be interested in the last part of your email application, the H.
